Diapering Downer

Baby Boy begins day care in a little over a month (sniff sniff). When we signed him up, we were 7 months pregnant and not sure how the whole cloth diaper scenario would work out. So, I called the day care last week to check-in with a few questions. Turns out, they only allow cloth diapers for those who are allergic to disposables. I suppose I could fib a smidgen and say he's allergic, but then I hear echos of my father... "Character is all about what you're doing when you think no one is looking..." (Sigh). So, that means we will be buying disposables for BB to use 9 hrs a day, 5 days a week. We've figured to an average of a Jumbo pack per week. That's roughly $40/month on diapers. We chose to do cloth diapers for the environmental impact with the bonus of saving a little money, so I'm bummed on both accounts.

That's lame. If they allow cloth for some kids, they clearly are capable to handling it. It's not that much work on their part - one extra diaper pail, that you'll probably provide.

Daycare can be a minefield of power issues, so don't start out on the wrong foot. If you really feel strongly about it, ask again, pointing out the flawed logic.

from moneysaving mom:
free or super cheap good disposables from Walgreens.

Diapers are on sale for $5.99 again this week. If you are able to garner the Prescription Savings booklet coupons, you should be able to get them free! Here's how the deal works:

Buy 3 packages of Walgreens diapers at $5.99 each
Use $2/1 coupon from the Prescription Savings booklet (should take $2 off each pack)
Use $5/2 coupon from EasySaver July booklet (should take $2.50 off each pack)
Spend $4.47 plus tax
Get $5 Register Reward (this is advertised in the July EasySaver booklet so if for some reason it doesn't print, be sure to politely ask them to re-ring your order or give you the $5 on a gift card)
Free after coupons and Register Reward--Yay!

Found your blog via Baby Cheapskate....

I've never had to deal with daycare issues, but I've heard the same: you don't know until you ask. If they have others in cloth, maybe they would be willing to do cloth for your BB too???

Until you decide, you should check out moneysavingmom.com or the Centsible Sawyer to see how to score deals on diapers via CVS or Walgreens. I'm expecting #2 and DH won't let me switch to cloth like I want, so I try to stock up via the deals posted on their websites. It's helped us save a lot of money and I found I liked a cheaper store version (Playskool diapers = CVS brand) just about as much as Huggies! :)

In any case, I like reading your posts about cloth. Maybe I can show them to DH and convince him it's time to switch - well, the price hikes should be enough, but you know men. ;o)

I'm with ejw on this one. How is it any different to toss a cloth diaper in a diaper pail or a disposable diaper in a trash can? They don't have to wash the diapers, so there should be no difference at all. I would point out that their rule makes no sense - or go ahead and say that your BB is allergic to disposables, since I'd say that every baby is sensitive in some way to all the chemicals that are in disposables. Good luck!!!
